Worked examples and how to read the result
Choose settings for the destination, then check the encoded bytes.
Prepare a clip for a 25 MB upload cap
Example input
A one-minute clip; maximum width 720 pixels; target 24 MB.
Expected result
A locally encoded copy with its actual file size shown.
The one-megabyte margin is only a planning allowance. If the output exceeds 25 MB, lower its width or target and encode again.
Target size is estimated from duration and bitrate. It is not a hard guarantee.
How Video Compressor works
Reduce a video file for messaging, email or a web page by changing its encoded resolution and compression settings. This tool re-encodes the first video stream and, unless muted, the first available audio stream. The original file stays unchanged on your device.
Choose MP4 for H.264 video with AAC audio or WebM for VP8 video with Vorbis audio. A maximum-width control keeps the original aspect ratio and avoids enlarging smaller sources. In quality mode, higher compression values favor smaller files at the cost of visual detail. In target mode, the tool estimates a video bitrate from your requested size and the source duration.
A target size is a planning estimate rather than a hard output cap. The completed result shows its actual size, and an oversized result is explicitly identified. Detailed motion, noise, audio and container overhead affect the final bytes. Processing uses a locally downloaded media engine and may take several minutes on mobile devices.
How to use Video Compressor
1. Choose a video
Select a source up to 250 MB. Keep the original until you have checked the exported video.
2. Set format and resolution
Choose MP4 or WebM and a maximum width. Smaller dimensions usually reduce the number of pixels that need encoding.
3. Choose quality or target size
Use compression quality, or enter a target in MB. Remove audio only when the result does not need its soundtrack.
4. Compress and inspect
Watch the result, compare the actual byte sizes, and download it. Retry with lower resolution if your upload limit is still exceeded.
Key features and technical specifications
Local video encoding
Video bytes remain in the browser while engine assets download from this website.
Size-aware settings
Shows actual original and output sizes instead of assuming every conversion saves space.
Output preview
Inspect motion and available audio before keeping the compressed copy.
Practical use cases
Prepare a messaging clip
Choose a smaller width and a target below your messaging service’s current upload limit, then verify the actual output size.
Reduce an email attachment
Make a shorter, smaller copy while retaining the original recording separately.
Prepare a website demo
Export an MP4 or WebM and check legibility of screen text after compression.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a video online without uploading it?
Choose a source, select settings and press Compress video. The encoder runs on your device after its application assets load.
Can I compress a video below 25 MB?
Enter 25 as a target size and choose an appropriate resolution. The result may exceed the estimate; check its actual size and retry if needed.
Why is the compressed video larger?
A highly optimized source may already be smaller than a new encoding. Lower resolution, increase compression or retain the original.
Does compression keep the sound?
The first audio stream is re-encoded unless Remove audio is enabled. Other audio tracks and subtitles are not copied.
Will this reduce video quality?
Lossy encoding can reduce detail. Compare text, faces and fast movement before sharing the result.
Can I cancel a long compression?
Yes. Cancel processing terminates the local engine. It does not alter the original file.

Videos up to 250 MB. Target size is an estimate, not a guaranteed cap. Processing can take several minutes, especially on mobile. Only the first video and optional first audio track are exported; subtitles and metadata are not copied. The media engine downloads when you begin; your file stays on your device.
